Event ideas

Published by Youth Week

You want to do something in Youth Week but don't know where to start?

Here's a list of some event ideas to help you out.

In previous years people have run activities and events, such as:

  • Debate or a forum: A group of people discussing a topic from different perspectives
  • Inter-generational sports matches or dance competitions
  • Family discussions – bringing together parents or caregivers with young people to discuss an issue, such as: the different pressures for youth today; or drugs and alcohol.
  • Festivals
  • Parties
  • Making something – such as sewing, or producing a resource or video
  • Art shows or competitions
  • Theatre, or a play
  • Music events
  • Inviting health organisations into your school or youth organisation
  • Elders teaching young people to lay a hangi, or…
  • Young people teaching adults about how to text, or use Youtube, or…
  • Amazing race

Other ideas:

  • Facebook petition or group
  • Parade
  • Holding a youth ‘jury’ on an issue – have young people or adults submit to you
  • A survey on an issue
  • Analysing the media
  • A gig to raise awareness of an issue – with music and speakers
  • Mufti day to raise money for a cause

Events ideas focussed on reducing the harm of alcohol:

  • Youth jury about how many liquor outlets/where alcohol should be sold  in your community
  • A public event to celebrate the 66% of 12-18 year olds that don’t binge drink (Youth ’07, University of Auckland).
  • School debate about whether NZ youth have a drinking problem
  • An event where caregivers and young people discuss moderating alcohol use together – are parents role-modelling good alcohol use, and are young people binge-drinking? What solutions can your whānau put in place to help reduce the harm of alcohol in their lives?
  • Produce a video (for Youtube or your school/organisation) about young people views of alcohol in their community. E.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnPy7aUCz-I
  • Facebook petition about alcohol advertising targeting young people
  • Establish a ‘Youth against Binge Drinking’ group. Have your launch during Youth Week.
  • Invite Students Against Driving Drunk to run an event
  • Analyse the media’s coverage of drinking and record your findings. Does the media promote binge drinking?
  • Take an alcohol advert and turn it on its head.
  • Survey other young people or adults about what they think are the consequences of binge-drinking are, and what they might do to limit how much they drink.
  • Pledge to limit your alcohol use. Ask your family and friends to join in. Sign the pledge!
  • A party or music event that actively promotes alcohol-free messages

The event guide is available to help you to run events. It includes information about planning, promotion, budgeting and funding.

Need funding to help events?
  • Youth Week grants - click here. Closes Wednesday 7 April 2010
  • Check out the Fund View database. Public libraries provide free access to Fund View
  • Talking to community development staff at your local council is also a good idea. If they cannot give you funding they might be able to provide equipment and staff support.
